james frey, author of "a million little pieces," admitted to embellishing 5 percent of his memoir about his life as a 23-year-old drug addict who checks into rehab.

why did he fess up? the smoking gun smoked him out, checked into his story. the rap sheet just wasn't there.

i'm tired of all the lies in the publishing industry. embellish all you want, but be upfront. frankly, truth is always stranger than fiction. but it doesn't always sell.

it doesn't help that oprah came to frey's defense, either.
